DESIGNING CHANGE IN CAMEROON

Help us to raise $325,000 to support CDVTA's mission in Cameroon

Who is CDVTA?

CDVTA is a development charity in Cameroon that provides services and resources for elders, women, children and disabled people. Founded 23 years ago by Francis Njuakom Nchii, CDVTA impacts over 150,000 people annually and aims to create a society in which all generations help each other live fulfilled lives with dignity, hope and purpose. Through CDVTA’s work, rural communities have access to clean drinking water, safe shelters, community centers, medical care, best farming practices, improved school grounds, and resources for women to create financial independence.

What Will The Funds Be Used For?

Our goal is to provide educational infrastructure to children in rural areas to ensure that students have a safe and well-equipped environment that promotes learning. Most importantly, consistent support will allow CDVTA to maintain their own operations, helping to provide infrastructures in many schools and communities across Cameroon.

What will my donation allow CDVTA to do?

  • Continue to provide safe infrastructure to accommodate over 3,000 children, (60% girls), at Government Bilingual High School (GBHS) Loum in the Littoral Region of Cameroon.
  • Ensure that at least 1,111 children regularly attend classes in the 11+ classrooms and are supported by a team of high value, privately hired teachers.
  • Consistently strengthen the learning environment for children including regular maintenance for the newly built classrooms where daily lessons take place. Regular maintenance extends to the planting of flowers and trees around the classrooms and school compound.
  • Improve the nutrition of children in schools through food supply, decreasing the number of hungry children and low-income families being sent away from school.
  • Secure health, hygiene, and sanitation in schools by improving washrooms, supporting deep wells via solar energy to supply safe and clean drinking water, and equipping school clinics with nurses to help cater to children’s needs.
  • Provide basic school needs and supplies including textbooks, notebooks, pens, pencils, uniform, bags, and shoes, to those children from very low-income homes in the community.
  • Improve the economic potentials of parents, especially women, through supporting their sustainable livelihoods and ability to earn income through organic gardening, farming, fishing, livestock, micro-loans, and petty trade.

How can my donation help CDVTA make an impact?

  • $25 will provide a child from a low-income family with exercise books, pens, and pencils for learning.

  • $40 will assist a child from a low-income family with a school bag, a few books, pens, and pencils for his/her education.

  • $50 will assist a low-income woman with a goat to rear and earn an income and pay her children’s school fees.

  • $100 will supply 10 packets of reusable sanitary pads to 10 girls (1 packet has 6 pads).

  • $500 will provide 50 children from low-income families with exercise books.

  • $1,000 will provide food for educational progress to 500 children from low-income families, enabling them to stay in school and learn.

  • $2,400 will cover the monthly salary of 1 PTA hired teacher to instruct 600 children.

  • $35,000 will build a deep well and supply clean safe drinking water to 1,500 children and 8,500 community members daily supported by a solar-hydro-electric adapted renewable energy hybrid pumping systems.

Jack York is the Co-Founder and President of It’s Never 2 Late. Jack is passionate about improving the quality of life for older adults by enriching their lives through technology that makes it easier to connect with loved ones while also enhancing their independence.

How Did We Get Involved?

In 2015, Jack York of iN2L met Francis Njuakom Nchii at the Global Ageing Conference in Perth, Australia. After the conference, Jack made a donation of $500 to support Francis’ work. With Jack’s donation, Francis purchased nine goats in Jack’s honor and gifted them to the poorest elder-led households in the community. These goats would provide a sustainable source of income for elder women and their families. Amazed and humbled, Jack invited Francis on a fundraising trip to the US. Together they raised more than $30,000 to fund the construction of a senior living center, the first of its kind in Cameroon.

Fast forward to 2018, when Banko Design was introduced to Francis by Jack during another trip to the US. Francis shared with us that the traditional experience of Cameroonian elders is often of poverty with limited access to care, support and services. In parts of Cameroon, women are unable to inherit the property of their husbands, nor are they allowed to work or generate income, making it impossible to care for themselves later in life without a husband.

As advocates for seniors in the US, both Banko Design and iN2L were inspired to create an annual fundraising event to help the elders and women of Cameroon. CDVTA’s core values and their mission to provide resources for seniors and women alight with the values of iN2L and Banko Design. From our 2020 and 2021 Telethons to support CDVTA, we raised over $130,000 that has been used to fund initiatives that have benefitted thousands of people in Cameroon. As we head into 2024 and beyond, we remain focused on our goal to raise $325,000 and provide continuous support to Francis, his team and those they serve.

CDVTA’s core efforts this year remain focused on providing safe and clean infrastructure at schools, in addition to retaining high quality teachers and team members. By providing schools with the proper resources that they need to operate, we will empower female students and teachers to attend school every week of the month, keep young men in school, off the streets, and out of local conflict, AND lift family units out of generational poverty through the education of both men and women.
